In the early morning light, Moses went up alone into the cloud covered mountain, to present himself to the Lord, for God had promised to proclaim His name there to Moses. Moses, himself, dared not define God, for God is sovereign. Only God has the capacity to name Himself. That is why Moses bowed and worshipped. Here is the declaration of His name from His own mouth. Ex. 34:1-7.read more

Where do I fit? What defines me as a person? Who am I in relation to the world, to my friends and peers, or to my parents? Who or what will I allow to shape who I am and determine my identity? ‘Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.’ Ps 139:16
It is marvelous to contemplate God’s foreknowledge. The Psalmist here expresses the extraordinary truth – that God knows each one of us and sees the potential direction of our whole lives. This runs counter to our natural inclination to make life up as we go, as though we were given a blank canvas upon which to paint our own story.

There are some jobs that rarely get done. We have a garage that leads straight into our house and it is rare that we use the front door. So it was with some horror that I had a really good look at the entrance to our house the other day. There were spider webs all over the brick work and light fitting, dirt and dust under the decorative rubber doormat, gravel and dead things on the tiles, and what appeared to be an entire anthropological layer of dust on the screen door.read more

Then, to his amazement, she had made the unbelievable claim to be still a virgin! This had added to his turmoil. He loved this girl, and had no wish to hurt her, but this was all too much to deal with. Should he break off their engagement and leave her to her father’s devices?read more

The freedom to walk in the light and find the will of God is available to all who confess Christ. What then are the impediments? If we are honest, we will have to admit that the right to hold onto our own assessments of life is a right we desperately do not want to relinquish. It is the last kingdom we feel we have. There we can still retreat to the exclusion of all other voices. There it is that our own decrees reign supreme—our judgments, our ideas, our perceptions of God.read more

Samson’s mother was told by an angel that she would bear a child who would be a Nazarite for life. A Nazarite was a devotee who did not cut his hair or drink strong drink. The human body is an amazing organism! It is so remarkable because all of the parts that function so well and keep us healthy are connected one to another. There are no ‘lone rangers’ in a healthy body. The big toes wiggle at one end of the body because the brain at the other end of the body tells them to do so. Connecting the two is an incredible set of electrical wiring called the ‘nervous system’, through which impulses are passed by a series of small cords. The impulses jump the gaps, or ‘synapses’, from one cord to another, thus connecting each part to every other part.read more

I was struck recently by an ad on the television that said, ‘life is full of questions’. I thought to myself, ‘this is so true’.
