God is love. The bible also says that God is Spirit and Light. When we speak of God, we know that there are three persons within God – ie God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Each Person within God is unique and as such each One is able to fellowship and “speak to” the Others within God. Also, as unique Persons, they each have a unique nature of love. (1 John 4:16; John 4:24; 4:8)
The Father is the One who had a desire to give life to many sons. The apostle John wrote, ‘Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God’. (1 John 3:1)
We also know the familiar scripture ‘for God [the Father] so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.’ So we see that the nature of the Father’s love is giving. He loves and so He gives. And what does the Father give? He gives sonship. (John 3:16)
Jesus, we know, is the Son of God. It is important to remember that God the Son was not born or created. He is and always was. Rather, because the Son loved the Father, He emptied His own life, so that He could become the Son of God for our sake.
The apostle Paul said, ‘He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, [ie emptied His own life] so that you, through His poverty, might become rich’. (2 Corinthians 8:9)
Jesus became the place for our sonship to be found. He became the Son, so that we could become sons of the Father in Him. He gave up His life, so that the Father’s life could be seen – that is, seen in us, the multitude of sons. And so we see the Son is love – loving the Father, and giving His life for the Father and for us.
The Holy Spirit is the third Person in God. He demonstrates love in the way that He reveals the Father and the Son. Without the Holy Spirit, the love of the Father and the Son would not be able to be given to us.
Again Paul writes, ‘The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us’. (Romans 5:5)
HE also said, ‘the Holy Spirit helps us with our infirmities’. In this we see that the Holy Spirit is love and gives Himself away also, just as the Father and Son do. (Rom 8:26)
Amazingly, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit invite us to join Them in Their fellowship of love! We are well aware that God does not need anything from us – God is all in all and what could we possibly add to God? And yet the Father, Son and Holy Spirit have each poured out Their lives so that we can fellowship with God. (1 Cor 15:28)
The Son poured out His life to receive the Father’s life, and became Jesus, the ‘only begotten Son’. He was then sent into the world to give life to whom He wishes. Who are those who receive this life? The answer is in that beautiful verse in John 3:16 “whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 5:21)
As sons within The Son, we can join with God in this life of love. We can have the same life of love that God is. We can become the sons of God and the children of light. What an amazing and wondrous promise. (John 12:36)
