Worship in Song - What Does it do?
By Carol Wollaston
Do you want to discover the real heart of vocal worship?
The word “worship” comes from the old English expression ‘worth-ship’, which means to give value and worth to something or someone. Biblically, worship involves an element of offering and sacrifice. This can be in attitude, in deed, or in something that we vocalise (usually in song).
When we gather in the church, it is to give God the worth that belongs to Him. Sometimes vocal worship can seem to be anything but true ‘worth-ship’. Here are some of the things that happen in true worship.
- Our hearts are turned to the will of God.
- We are led humbly to desire Him.
- Our minds are cleared to hear God’s Word.
- We can focus on God and what He is saying, rather than on an individual or a band.
- We are enabled to participate with the Lord and our brothers and sisters.
- Our souls are warmed with love for God and our brothers and sisters
- We receive revelation not just emotional uplift.
- We are called to submit one to another in the fellowship of worship.
- We allow the Spirit of the Lord to direct the flow of worship and the use of His gifts.
- We are encouraged in a fresh way each time to offer praise and thanksgiving from the heart.
This is the worship we seek to participate in at Chapel on the Boulevard. You are welcome to join with us in it.
